Opposition’s ‘Vote Theft’ March (Social Media)
National News: The political temperature in the country has soared over allegations of “vote theft,” with the opposition accusing the Election Commission of large-scale irregularities in the voter list. On Monday, these tensions escalated dramatically in the national capital, as a protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission was halted by police, leading to the detention of several top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been vocal in recent days, accusing the Election Commission of overseeing manipulation and rigging in the voter list. He alleged that the integrity of the democratic process is under threat and called for urgent action to safeguard free and fair elections.
To amplify the issue, the opposition bloc decided to stage a joint march from Parliament to the Election Commission’s headquarters, aiming to submit their concerns directly.
In the afternoon, a large contingent of opposition MPs gathered at the Makar Dwar gate of Parliament. Carrying placards and raising slogans, they began walking towards the Election Commission’s office. Leaders from multiple parties—including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress—joined hands to demonstrate unity on the issue.

However, the march was intercepted midway by Delhi Police, who had set up heavy barricades. Paramilitary forces were deployed in significant numbers to control the situation and prevent the crowd from proceeding further.
Despite the police block, the atmosphere quickly turned charged. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav jumped over the barricade in defiance. TMC leaders Mahua Moitra and Sagarika Ghosh climbed on top of the barricades, waving at supporters and intensifying the protest’s energy. Slogans grew louder, and the scene became increasingly chaotic as more leaders attempted to cross. The determined push by the opposition prompted a quick and firm response from security forces.
As the situation threatened to spiral out of control, police moved in to detain several prominent figures. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and many other MPs were taken into custody. They were seated in police buses and transported to different police stations across Delhi. Opposition leaders condemned the detentions, calling them a “conspiracy to crush democratic rights.” They alleged that the government was using police force to silence dissent and avoid facing the people’s concerns.
The confrontation coincided with a planned meeting between the Election Commission and a 30-member delegation from the opposition at 12 noon. The EC, citing space limitations, requested the opposition to send only 30 representatives and provide their names in advance.
The opposition refused, stating they would either all attend together or boycott the meeting entirely. Leaders claimed the EC was deliberately restricting participation to avoid displaying the full strength of the united opposition.

Parallel to the protest, Rahul Gandhi unveiled a new public campaign aimed at mobilizing citizens against alleged voter list manipulation. He launched a dedicated website inviting people to register complaints about irregularities and urged them to join what he described as “a battle to save democracy.” Rahul asserted that the issue transcends party politics and concerns the very foundation of India’s democratic system.
The day’s events have further deepened the standoff between the government and the opposition. With both sides refusing to back down, the allegations of “vote theft” are set to dominate political discourse in the coming days, adding another flashpoint to the already heated pre-election atmosphere.
